Denton First-grade girl died from choking on Food
May 24th, 2010We have been watching this matter from the sidelines with a great amount of interest. When we first became aware of the tragic accident, we were particularly concerned because it touches particularly close to home. (One of the owners of our firm has a child that has serious food allergies.) I was surprised to find that the blood tests indicated no anaphylaxis. Our thoughts go out to the family of the young girl.
A Wayne Stuart Ryan Elementary died from choking on food, according to a final ruling by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy report released late Friday indicated Jensen Wright, 7, died on March 30 from asphyxia. Her death was ruled in accident according to the medical examiner’s website. Apparently, investigators had looked into whether the young girl had a food allergy that triggered anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction to the food eaten.
Apparently, the young girl had eaten a peanut butter sandwich and an apple and went to the restroom and got back in line to go to her classroom. As she stood in line she started to have problems and classmate called for a teacher. The teacher then walked Jensen to the nurses office where she later collapsed. Prior to Jensen collapsing, the nurse noticed that her lips were blue, but her heart rate was normal. Apparently, the nurse attempted the Heimlich maneuver and CPR, but to no avail.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a child dies every five days in the United States from choking on food, which is the leading cause of death among children under 14.
